Anti‐obesity activity of anthocyanin and carotenoid extracts from color‐fleshed sweet potatoes

Abstract: The anti-obesity effects of anthocyanin and carotenoid extracts from color-fleshed potatoes were studied with 3T3-L1 cells in vitro and high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice in vivo. Treatment of 3T3-L1 adipocytes with anthocyanin and carotenoid extracts, respectively, after differentiation induction significantly inhibited fat accumulation by 63.1 and 83.5%. Studies of adipogenesis inhibition showed that the anthocyanin extract acts at intermediate stages, whereas the carotenoid extract influences all the st… Show more

“…A medium level of orangefleshed sweet potato variety (100 g) can meet the daily needs of vitamin A for an early age generation [16]. Orange-fleshed sweet potato is known for its anti-oxidative, antidiabetic [17][18][19], and anti-obesity activities [20]. Regardless of the therapeutic effects of orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, the gastro-protective effects of carotenoid extract (CE) from orange-fleshed sweet potato have not been investigated.…”

“…Obesity is an abnormal condition that increases the risk of health problems by causing excessive accumulation of body fat (Guo et al., 2020). It is a high‐risk factor for a number of severe diseases including diabetes, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, circulatory diseases, and respiratory diseases (Kim, Koo, et al., 2020; Kim, Kim, et al., 2020; Terao et al., 2020). Among the various causes of obesity, the imbalance between energy storage and consumption is crucial (Gan et al., 2020; Wu, Guo, et al., 2020; Wu, Sun, et al., 2020).…”

“…Currently, obesity therapy depends on lifestyle interventions, such as diet control and exercise, but it is often difficult for patients to carry out (Joo et al., 2020; Zheng et al., 2020). However, a few drugs or surgical therapies, with certain risks, are suitable for severely obese patients (Behl et al., 2021), such as Orlistat, which has side effects, such as angioedema, bronchospasm, and allergic reactions (Kim, Koo, et al., 2020; Kim, Kim, et al., 2020). Therefore, there is an urgent need to investigate a safer and more effective strategy to prevent obesity (Ken and Samantha 2020), finding a promising natural product to treat obesity and metabolic disease has received increasing attention.…”
