Anti-Oxidant and Anti-Enzymatic Activities of Sea Buckthorn (Hippophaë rhamnoides L.) Fruits Modulated by Chemical Components

Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyze in vitro biological activities as anti-oxidant, anti-α-amylase, anti-α-glucosidase, anti-lipase, and anti-lipoxygenase activity, relative to bioactive components (phenolic acids, flavonols, xanthophylls, carotenes, esterified carotenoids, tocopherols, tocotrienols, and fatty acids) and the basic chemical composition (sugars, organic acid, dry matter, soluble solid, pH, titratable acidity, ash, pectins, and vitamin C) of Hippophaë rhamnoides berries. Six sea buckthorn cultiv… Show more

“…The lowest sugar content was detected in black medick and mung bean (>0.2 g/100 g fw) sprouts, while in beetroot sprouts, similarly to microgreens, no sugars were identified. Our results corroborated those obtained for sea buckthorn fruits [ 15 ] and artichoke [ 14 ], but differed from those for microgreens analyzed by Choe et al [ 10 ]. Apart from their growth-related functions, sugars also serve as signaling molecules that modulate light signaling pathways.…”

“…Mung bean sprouts had low content of polyphenols, chlorophylls and L-ascorbic acid. Previous works [ 5 , 15 , 33 ] reported that antioxidant potential can be related to the content of phenolics and other bioactive compounds. Antioxidant capacity measured by ABTS and FRAP assays correlated with the content of L-ascorbic acid (r 2 = 0.671 and 0.872); polyphenols (r 2 = 0.682 and 0.538), particularly flavan-3-ols (r 2 = 0.742 and 0.649); and polymeric procyanidins for the ABTS assay (r 2 = 0.758).…”

“…QA and MA were the most abundant acids in the SBP (Table 4). Similar organic acid composition of SB, despite variation in acid content, which may be due to genotype, origin, harvesting time and juice processing parameters, was reported previously [50,52,53]. QA was the major compound in the all analysed samples, followed by MA; while the amounts of CA was found at lower levels.…”

“…The carotenoid found in the lowest concentration was cis-β-carotene which varied between 0.21 and 0.80 mg/100 g in all berry extracts, with no significant differences seen between varieties (p < 0.05). Further support for the occurrence of a great variability in the concentrations of carotenoid compounds comes from the analysis of berries from six sea buckthorn cultivars commonly grown in Poland where the total carotenoid concentration found ranged between 47 mg and 509 mg/100 g DW [39].…”
