Anti-SSA/Ro Antibody as a Risk Factor for Fluorouracil-Induced Drug Eruptions Showing Acral Erythema and Discoid-Lupus-Erythematosus-Like Lesions

Abstract: Background: It is well known that fluorouracil (FU) agents frequently induce discoid-lupus-erythematosus (DLE)-like eruptions and acral erythema in Japan. However, the etiology of these drug eruptions caused by FU agents has not been clarified yet. Objective: To determine if the existence of anti-SSA/Ro antibody may be a risk factor for FU-agent-induced DLE-like eruptions and acral erythema. Patients and Methods: Six patients with FU-agent-induced drug eruptions showing DLE-like lesions and acral erythema were… Show more

“…10 Overall, discoid DILE is a very rare subtype of DILE with less than 30 published cases almost exclusively associated with 5-fluorouracil agents. 5 We found that discoid DILE may be also induced by anti-TNF agents and have similar clinical and pathological features than classical discoid DILE.…”

“…5,7 Drug-induced chronic cutaneous lupus and drug-induced flares of systemic lupus erythematosus caused by 5-FU and FU agents (eg, tegafur and uracil-tegafur) have been reported in a few cases. [8][9][10][11] Interestingly, Adachi et al 12 have recently suggested that the presence of anti-SSA/Ro antibodies might be a risk factor for the development of FU agenteinduced LE-like drug eruptions. SCLE caused by neoplasms has also been reported in the English-language literature in 12 patients.…”

“…For FU agents, such as 5-FU, tegafur and tegafur/uracil (UFT), drug eruptions of discoid lupus erythema-like and photosensitive types are well known, but linear erythema or scratch dermatitis type is extremely rare. 4 Here we present a rare case of drug eruption due to S-1 showing a unique skin eruption of linear erythema and scratch marks that were almost identical to shiitake dermatitis.…”
