Az egykori, úgynevezett szocialista világrendszer részeként a magyar rendőrség hosszú ideig következetesen másolta a szovjet milícia mintáját működésmódjában, struktúrájában, rendfokozataiban, fejlődésének irányaiban egyaránt. Az akkori társadalmi-politikai rendszer mindkét ország rendészeti rendszereinek fejlődésére rányomta máig ható bélyegét. A rendszerváltozást követően a rendőrségek saját pályájukon folytatták fejlődésüket az európai, nemzetközi elvárásokat, bevált gyakorlatokat figyelembe véve. A bűnözés határokon átnyúló jellegéből fakadóan a szervezetek életében növekvő jelentőségű lett az együttműködés más országok hatóságaival és a nemzetközi bűnüldöző szervezetekkel. Ezek között kiemelkedő jelentőségű a Nemzetközi Bűnügyi Rendőrség Szervezetével (Interpol), valamint az Európai Rendőrségi Hivatallal (Europol) folytatott együttműködés. Ugyanakkor ezek tartalma szerint más csatornák felhasználása is megjelent. A megfelelő struktúrák, együttmunkálkodási módok összevetése érdekes összefüggésekre világít rá, és a szerző szerint hasznosítható tapasztalatokkal szolgálhat.
