Anti-theft energy metering for smart electrical distribution system

Abstract: Accurate metering and billing of actual energy consumed by consumers is integral to commercial management of an electric utility. An aggregate technical and commercial loss in India is around 27% and this is very high in spite of various reforms and measures by electricity boards across country. One of the significant components of these losses is Theft. Electricity theft is a grave problem across the globe. Improvement in aggregate technical and commercial losses in phased manner is very important for financi… Show more

“…The authors in [16], proposed a conceptual approach to derive both the approximate location and extent of energy theft at an exact location in real-time. The proposed system employs power line carriers and an improved metering mechanism for an intelligent distribution network.…”

“…Unlike previous related studies, this present study offers a more accurate and realistic way of detecting energy meter by-passing and energy theft. Previous researchers have presented systems that calculate, estimate and predict user's consumption based on consumption patterns within a specified period [1,2,5,9,10,11]. Such that the energy meter compares the stored and estimated consumption with the current consumption.…”

“…Electricity theft is a form of non-technical loss. According to [5], any form of interference done by complete or partial bypassing of the meter to adulterate its values is referred to as electricity theft. The Nontechnical losses are caused by human error.…”
