Anti-Trypanosomal Activity of Nigerian Plants and Their Constituents

Abstract: African trypanosomiasis is a vector-borne parasitic disease causing serious risks to the lives of about 60 million people and 48 million cattle globally. Nigerian medicinal plants are known to contain a large variety of chemical structures and some of the plant extracts have been screened for antitrypanosomal activity, in the search for potential new drugs against the illness. We surveyed the literatures on plants and plant-derived products with antitrypanosomal activity from Nigerian flora published from 1990… Show more

“…Some of these classes of compounds detected in the plant extracts used in this work have been shown to exhibit antitrypanosomal activities. With the exception of saponins which have been shown not to have antitrypanosomal actions [12], flavonoids are known to possess significant antitrypanosomal actions [13,14]. Therefore, the action of the extracts in eliminating or reducing the parasite motility may be due to the actions of flavonoids which are present in the extracts used in this study.…”

“…[55][56][57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67] It is our goal to provide evidence of the efficacy and potency of plants used in traditional medicine against protozoal infections. The systematic documentation of the plant-based chemical constituents of African traditional medicine and attempting to using in silico procedures to investigate their modes of action are ongoing efforts, [44][45][46]52,53 particularly on the isolated compounds from African medicinal plants (AMPs) with evaluated in vitro and/or in vivo activities against trypanosomiasis, [68][69][70][71][72][73][74] schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis 73,74 and other parasitic protozoal diseases. 4 However, the most recent review dates about 3 years back and was focused only on plants collected from Nigeria.…”

“…proposed to assay the antitrypanosomal activity of this plant, in particular as some related 8 species, such as Magnifera indica and Spondias mombim, exhibit antitrypanosomal effects 9 (Nwodo et al, 2015). 10…”
