Antiangiogenic Activity of the Lipophilic Antimicrobial Peptides from an Endophytic Bacterial Strain Isolated from Red Pepper Leaf

Abstract: The induction of angiogenesis is a crucial step in tumor progression, and therefore, efficient inhibition of angiogenesis is considered a powerful strategy for the treatment of cancer. In the present study, we report that the lipophilic antimicrobial peptides from EML-CAP3, a new endophytic bacterial strain isolated from red pepper leaf (Capsicum annuum L.), exhibit potent antiangiogenic activity both in vitro and in vivo. The newly obtained antimicrobial peptides effectively inhibited the proliferation of hum… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the therapeutic application of AMPs is not limited to their antimicrobial function. AMPs have been documented to perform many other activities, including modulation of the immune response [ 9 , 10 ], anti-angiogenic and anti-tumor activities [ 11 , 12 ]. Indeed, some AMPs have been suggested to have far more potent immunomodulatory activities than antimicrobial functions [ 13 ].…”

“…In the biocontrol strain P. fluorescens Pf0-1, the importance of histidine metabolism during the interaction with host plants has been discovered through gene-expression analyses [ 100 ]. Furthermore, antimicrobial peptides are a group of less studied, but potentially important compounds associated with biocontrol, which have been discovered through studies on bioactive metabolites in both fungal [ 101 ] and bacterial endophytes [ 102 , 103 ].…”

“…Lipophilic AMPs from new endophytic bacterial strain, EML-CAP3 isolated from red pepper leaf ( Capsicum annuum L.) were studied by Jung et al The newly obtained AMP demonstrated potent tumor induced angiogenic inhibition by downregulating Hypoxia inducible factor-1 α and its target gene VEGF in human umbilical vein endothelial cells [ 90 ]. Guo et al devised bacterial particles consisting of fixed bacteria E. coli (TOP10), double attenuated (aroA− and dam-) Salmonella typhimurium strain RE88, and Streptococcus thermophilus.…”
