“…Concerning the common physiological activities of brazilin and hematoxylin, the following are known: both the substances restored activity of the frog heart poisoned by various chemicals (GABOR and HORVATH, 1953), they prolonged the effect of adrenalin in surviving organs and in vivo , and they were effective in restoring lowered and normal capillary resistance in rats (GABOR and Dux,'1952). It was also found that brazilin had the bacteriostatic activity against a number of microorganisms (SANCHEZ-MORROQU~N et al, 1958;PRATT and YUZURIHA, 1959;DE LIMA et al, 1959), and hematoxylin, when administered together with dimethyl sulfoxide to mice carrying a transplantable lymphosarcoma, caused cellular alterations leading to distinct tissue and cellular degeneration (ROGERS, 1970). However, brazilin has not been known to possess antiinflammatory activity though hematoxylin was reported to decrease mustard oil inflammation in rabbit skin (GABOR and S Z~R~D Y , 1952).…”
