Sanguiritrine is a plant antimicrobial preparation possessing a broad spectrum of action [1,2]. The active substance is obtained from the above-ground part of Macleaya microcapra (Maxim Fedde) and Macleaya cordata (Will& R. Br.) [3,4] Study of the raw plant materials of M. microcapra of various origin and quality showed that the extraction of technical-purity sanguiritrine is accompanied by the coprecipitation of by-products responsible for the deeper coloration of the target technical products. Thin-layer chromatograms on a silica gel exhibited an additional spot having an orange-red color and a lower mobility compared to those of sanguinarine and chelerythrine. The impurity compound was extracted from the aqueous phase in the form of bisulfate.
