Antibacterial Activity of Fe3O4/Cu Nanocomposite: Green Synthesis Using Carum carvi L. Seeds Aqueous Extract

Abstract: Here, we describe the using of biosynthesis method for the synthesis of Fe3O4, Cu nanoparticles and Fe3O4/Cu nanocomposite using Carum carvi extract and assessment of their antibacterial activity. Our approach is eco‐friendly, non‐toxic and clean. These nanoparticles/nanocomposites were characterized by UV‐Vis, FTIR, XRD, EDX and SEM, techniques. The findings indicated that the of Fe3O4 and Cu NPs, and Fe3O4/Cu nanocomposite have an average particle size of 25 nm, 37 nm, and 62 nm, respectively. On the other s… Show more

“…If we are speaking of doping oxides with phytosynthesized NPs or the direct phytosynthesis of bi-metallic NPs, the approach can harvest the properties of both components. This was proven by Adebayo et al [77] and Heydari et al [79], who evaluated bi-metallic NPs via comparisons with separate NPs. Bi-metallic Au/Ag NPs have been proven to be efficient (in some cases even superior to Ag NPs) against a series of microbial and isolates lines.…”

“…Their observation is surprising, as it would be expected bi-metallic NPs to show intermediate antimicrobial properties [80]. Similarly, Fe 3 O 4 /Cu NPs have been proven to retain both their magnetic properties (from the Fe 3 O 4 component) and antimicrobial properties (from the Cu NPs), with a minimum inhibitory (bactericidal) concentration (MIC/MBC) close to the ones obtained for Cu NPs against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria [79]. This approach is particularly interesting for applications that request two different properties for the composites (such as magnetic and antimicrobial properties).…”

“…A huge number of reports are dedicated to Ag 0 , Au 0 monometallic and Ag 0 /Au 0 bimetallic nanoparticles, obtained by biological methods and reviewed in [54][55][56][57]. Silver nanoparticles have been biologically obtained by all possible methods [58], including bacteria-assisted bioreduction (in particular, using Escherichia coli, Bacillus licheniformis, B. subtilis, among others), fungi (Aspergillus fumigatus, Fusarium acumina-tum, Penicillium fellu-tanum, among others), yeast (yeast strain) and numerous plant extracts containing polyphenols as reductants ( pennyroyal-Mentha pulegium L., Platanus orientalis, thyme-Thymus vulgaris L. [59], carum carvi L. seeds [60,61], black and green tea, lemon grass, grape wastes, orange wastes, Magnolia kobus, marshmallow flower (Althaea officinalis L.), geranium, etc.). Au and Ag nanoparticles can be obtained with the use of actinomycetes (microorganisms with some properties of bacteria and fungi) and leaves of Passiflora edulis [62,63].…”

“…In one of the Prophetic hadith, black seeds were mentioned in connection with the cure of all diseases [5]. The seeds and their oil exhibited favorable medicinal activities as immunomodulatory [6], anticancer [7,8], antimicrobial [9,10], analgesic, anti-inflammatory [11], gastroprotective [12], hepatoprotective [13], antioxidant [14] and renal protective properties [15]. The seeds can also be used for the treatment of several diseases such as diarrhea, bronchitis, rheumatism, asthma, skin diseases, and liver problems.…”
