ANTIBACTERIAL AND ANTIBIOFILM ACTIVITIES OF Swietenia macrophylla King ETHANOLIC EXTRACT AGAINST FOODBORNE PATHOGENS

Abstract: Swietenia macrophylla is known to possess several medicinal uses, however, its antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against foodborne pathogens remain not well investigated. The present work was performed to examine the phytochemical compounds, antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of S. macrophylla ethanolic extract (SMEE) against four foodborne pathogens namely, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 14028, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Shigella sonnei ATCC 33862 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 10145. The phytoch… Show more

“…Overall, biofilm formation can protect bacteria from antibiotics, making them more resistant and difficult to eliminate, leading to persistent infections. Continuous screening for antibiofilm activity of natural products may shed new light on the control of biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance [94][95][96].…”

“…MIC determination was performed using the microtiter broth dilution assay method in a sterile 96well microplate with a flat bottom as previously reported (Man et al, 2022). In general, the SMME was serially diluted in distilled water to obtain 1000 µg/mL, 500 µg/mL, 250 µg/mL, 125 µg/mL, 62.5 µg/mL, and 31.3 µg/mL concentrations respectively.…”
