Antibacterial Anthraquinone Derivatives from a Sea Anemone-Derived Fungus Nigrospora sp.

Abstract: Chemical investigation of a marine-derived fungus Nigrospora sp., isolated from an unidentified sea anemone, yielded two new hydroanthraquinone analogues, 4a-epi-9α-methoxydihydrodeoxybostrycin (1) and 10-deoxybostrycin (2), together with seven known anthraquinone derivatives (3-9). The structures of the two new compounds were established through extensive NMR spectroscopy as well as a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis using Cu Kα radiation. The antibacterial activities of compounds 1-9 and 10 acetyl d… Show more

“…(TA26-9) and their structure-activity relationships were also discussed. More importantly, 3-acetoxy-4-deoxybostrycin exhibited a promising activity against B. cereus with an MIC value of 48.8 nM, which was stronger than that of the positive control ciprofloxacin (MIC 1,250 nM) (Yang et al 2012). Moreover, a series of 14-membered resorcylic acid lactones (RALs), including three new metabolites, cochliomycins isolated from the gorgonian-derived fungus Cochliobolus lunatus, was also recently isolated from a zoanthid-derived Cochliobolus sp.…”

“…The developing zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) is an in vivo developmental model with a number of advantages over in vitro systems and provides a simple, inexpensive and rapid assay to screen for teratogenicity [4,5]. As part of our ongoing investigation into new natural metabolites, a series of antibacterial, antifouling and cytotoxic products have been isolated from marine fungi from the South China Sea [6,7,8,9]. Under the guidance of zebrafish embryo teratogenicity assay, a new chlorinated benzophenone derivative, (±)-pestalachloride D ( 1 ), along with one related known analogue, (±)-pestalachloride C ( 2 ) [10] (Figure 1), was obtained from the organic extracts of the marine-derived fungus Pestalotiopsis sp.…”
