Antibacterial Character of Cationic Polymers Attached to Carbon-Based Nanomaterials

Abstract: The preparation of hybrid polymeric systems based on carbon derivatives with a cationic polymer is described. The polymer used is a copolymer of a quaternizable methacrylic monomer with another dopamine-based monomer capable of anchoring to carbon compounds. Graphene oxide and graphene as well as hybrid polymeric systems were widely characterized by infrared, Raman and photoemission X-ray spectroscopies, electron scanning microscopy, zeta potential and thermal degradation. These allowed confirming the attachme… Show more

“…Additionally, the incorporation of antifouling PEG prevented nonspecific cell attachment. Similarly, catechol was copolymerized with 2-(4-methylthiazol-5-yl) ethyl methacrylate (MTA) [ 49 ] and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) [ 50 ] to create cationic antimicrobial polymers.…”

“…The standard antibiotic Penicillin and Gentamicin were used as positive controls and distilled water as negative control in each replicate. The plates were incubated at 37 °C for 2 h under visible light and the dark environment for assessment of the antibacterial activity [ 67 , 68 ]; irradiation was performed under visible light (natural indoor light during the day and 100 W fluorescent lamps overnight) for a certain time.…”

“…The PLA granules have a density of 1.24 g/cm 3 , glass transition temperature (Tg) of 59 • C and melting point of 160 • C, molecular weight (MW) of 182,000 g/mol (Škrlová et al, 2022). Graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by a modified Hummers method (Plachá et al, 2020a). Concentrated H 2 SO 4 , KMnO 4 , graphite flakes, and concentrated H 2 O 2 were used for preparation of GO.…”
