Antibacterial Collagen‐Based Nanocomposite Dressings for Promoting Infected Wound Healing

Abstract: Pathogenic bacterial infection is the most frequent wound complication, which has become a major clinical and healthcare challenge in wound management worldwide, leading to impaired healing processes, the risk of amputation, and even death. Here, collagen-based nanocomposite dressings (APZC) with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity are developed to promote the infected full-thickness wound healing. Short rod-like shaped ZnO NPs are synthesized and then coated with polydopamine (PDA) to obtain PDA coated ZnO … Show more

“…The cytotoxicity of microneedles was measured by the slightly modified CCK-8 assay. 38 A high-glucose medium, 100 IU/mL penicillin−streptomycin solution, and fetal bovine serum were mixed at a volume ratio of 100:10:1 to prepare a complete culture medium. Microneedles were sterilized under UV irradiation before adding into a complete medium to obtain the sample culture medium.…”

“…27,28 However, the majority of the existing PDA-based hydrogels require complex modification or synthesis, which might hinder them from further application. 29–31 Therefore, it is imperative to develop PDA-based injectable hydrogels through facile preparation. 32…”

“…[ 8 ] Dopamine‐coated zinc oxide nanofibers have also been introduced into the collagen matrix and cross‐linked with sodium dialdehyde alginate to stabilize the collagen structure and achieve durable and excellent broad‐spectrum antibacterial activity. [ 9 ] As the main components of the small intestinal submucosa (SIS) membrane are types I and III collagen, collagen‐binding peptides have been used to construct chimeric peptides with antibacterial osteogenic ability in SIS, with the aim of providing some antimicrobial activity in bone regeneration. [ 10 ] However, the long‐term safety of metal ions and the high cost of using antimicrobial peptides limit their clinical use.…”
