Antimicrobial resistance is a major public health issue raising growing concern in the face of dwindling response options. It is therefore urgent to find new anti-infective molecules enabling us to fight effectively against ever more numerous bacterial infections caused by ever more antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In this quest for new antibacterials, essential oils (or compounds extracted from essential oils) appear to be a promising therapeutic option. In the present work, we investigate the potential antibacterial synergy between a combination of terpinen-4-ol and α-terpineol (10:1) compared to standard tea tree oil. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined. Then, time kill assays, in vitro cytotoxicity and bactericidal activity on latent bacteria (persisters) were investigated. Finally, an in silico study of the pharmacokinetic parameters of α-terpineol was also performed. Altogether, our data demonstrate that the combination of terpinen-4-ol and α-terpineol might be a precious weapon to address ESKAPE pathogens.

Aims: Chemical mouthwash has been used for ages as one of the oral hygiene practices, but due to its side effects, mouthwash formulated from plants has become a better alternative. Andrographis paniculata (AP) is an herb plant known for its antibacterial effects. Thus, this study was aimed to compare the antibacterial activity of AP with commercial mouthwash and to observe the stability of mouthwash formulated from AP. Methodology and results: Aqueous extract of AP was used to prepare herbal mouthwash. The antibacterial activity of AP mouthwash and three commercial types of mouthwash, namely Colgate Plax, Oral B and Listerine, were determined by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) through broth dilution method and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) against selected oral pathogens; Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus. The AP mouthwash was stored for six months and a year at three different storages to assess its stability and microbial contamination by the pour and drop plate method. The results indicated that Colgate Plax and AP mouthwash have the best antibacterial activity compared to two other commercial types of mouthwash with an inhibition percentage of 95.96% at 15.63 mg/mL for S. aureus (Colgate Plax) and 168.45% at 62.5 mg/mL for S. aureus, 93.75% at 7.81 mg/mL for S. mutans and 98.51% at 7.81 mg/mL for S. sobrinus (AP mouthwash). The parameters measured remained unchanged during storage except at room temperature, while the pH level ranged from 6.72 to 7.45. The AP mouthwash showed stable sterility throughout the study. Conclusion, significance and impact of study:The AP mouthwash shows good antibacterial activity against oral pathogens and is almost similar to other commercial mouthwashes and stable to be used for up to a year. In addition, it has excellent potential as an alternative herbal mouthwash in treating oral pathogens effectively.

Lemongrass is a medicinal plant that produces essential oil with a variety of therapeutic properties. Although lemongrass essential oil (LGEO) is promising in clinical applications, the existing knowledge on the efficacy and safety of LGEO remains limited. This scoping review aimed to identify, summarize, and synthesize existing literature related to the clinical applications of LGEO to provide an overview of its potential therapeutic benefits for patients. Three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus) were used following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines to find articles published between 1 January 2013, and 1 November 2022. A total of 671 records were identified and 8 articles were included in this scoping review. The majority of patients received oromucosal and topical treatment. The results of the studies suggest that LGEO might be a useful tool in the treatment of periodontitis, gingivitis and oral malodour, with similar efficacy to chlorhexidine (anti-gingivitis effect) and doxycycline (periodontitis). Additionally, LGEO has the potential for treating pityriasis versicolor and preventing skin aging and may have anti-dandruff effects. These findings not only underscore the diverse clinical potential of LGEO but also emphasize its comparable efficacy to established treatments. Further research is imperative to comprehensively evaluate LGEO’s effectiveness, safety, mechanisms of action, potential interactions with other medications, and its long-term tolerability across diverse populations.
