Antibacterial Effectiveness of Selected Moroccan Essential Oils Against the Highly Virulent Jp2 Clone of Aggregatibacter Actinomycetemcomitans

Abstract: Objective: Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) serotype b JP2 clone is a highly virulent strain, considered as a major etiologic agent in aggressive periodontitis in patients of African descent, such as Moroccan adolescents. Antibiotics have been and continue to be the only effective treatment of periodontal infections caused by this periodontal bacterium. However, today there is enough scientific evidence on the existence of an increased resistance of oral bacteria to antibiotics. Therefore, the search… Show more

“…The results showed the superior properties of the essential oil and suggested the use of the oil with other antibiotics against resistant bacteria. [42][43][44] The mechanism of action suggested is that lemongrass oil and its components induced intracellular leakage, as well as ultrastructural changes in bacterial cells, as it was shown by electron micrographs that a hole occurring on the surface of bacterial cell treated with citral, a main component of lemongrass, at a concentration of 4 μL/mL. 45 Another beneficial effect of lemongrass essential oil is its anti-inflammatory, as well as antifungal, properties.…”

“…In Morocco, investigations concerning the chemical composition and biological properties of C. citratus are fragmentary [43][44][45]. Only one study had addressed the chemical C. citratus essential oils composition [44].…”

“…Only one study had addressed the chemical C. citratus essential oils composition [44]. Similarly, one study has tested the EOs inhibition effect against Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans virulent strains of [43]. Therefore, more investigations are needed to determine the antioxidant activities and phenolic and flavonoid contents of varieties of C. citratus that are grown in Morocco so far from its native area (Asia).…”
