Antibacterial effects of Schisandra chinensis extract on Staphylococcus aureus and its application in food

Abstract: Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill is a member of the Magnoliaceae and is used in traditional medicine. Its extracts have antibacterial activity against foodborne pathogens. In present study, the antibacterial properties of Sc. chinensis were tested on S.aureus. An in vitro antibacterial assay showed that Sc. chinensis extracts (SCE) inhibited the growth of test bacteria at a MBC of 18mg mL−1. SCE demonstrated strong antibacterial activity in barley soup system. Treated by SCE, the growth curves of S.aureus e… Show more

“…[3] Small zones of inhibition at the bottom of the plate were found also for leaf extracts of S. chinensis and S. henryi, as well as for the male and female leaf extracts of S. rubriflora. High antibacterial properties of the S. chinensis fruit extract were also found by Cui et al (against Gram-negative Escherichia coli) [28] and Song [29] The S. chinensis fruit activity against S. aureus was also confirmed in our laboratory (not published results).…”

“…Schisandra chinensis has antimicrobial activity, and its extracts can inhibit L. monocytogenes , E. coli , and Salmonella enteritidis ( Choi et al, 2013 ). E. coli is inhibited by the release of cellular contents, resulting in destruction of the bacterial cells, following incubation with Schisandra chinensis extracts ( Song et al, 2018 ). Furthermore, Ecklonia cava , a seaweed, is also known to have antimicrobial activity against foodborne pathogens, such as Salmonella spp.…”

“…Some traditional Chinese medicines have good abilities of bacteriostasis for bacteria, including foodborne bacteria [23]. C. chinensis, S. chinensis, and honeysuckle are frequently applied in the treatment of the infection of bacteria [24][25][26]. In order to study the antibacterial effects of the medicines on different bacteria, the bacteria were inhibited by the three medicines and then determined by the developed method.…”
