Antibacterial efficacy of several intracanal medicaments for endodontic therapy

Abstract: The antibacterial efficacy of intracanal medicaments for 2 and 7 days, in open apex root canals contaminated with Enterococcus faecalis biofilms was compared. One hundred and thirty-eight standardized uniradicular human roots were inoculated with E. faecalis. Colony forming units (CFU) were recorded before and after medication. Samples were divided in two (2/7 days), and subdivided (n=8/group): triple antibiotic paste (TAP); double antibiotic paste (DAP); dental base paste (DBP), consisting of calcium hydroxid… Show more

“…For the in vitro category, 12 studies were analyzed ( 27 . However, some studies demonstrated that Ca(OH) 2based formulations may perform similarly to TAP if combined with chitosan 35 , propylene glycol and calcium carbonate 36 , or the commercial ingredients of UltraCal XS (Ultradent, South Jordan, UT), ie, radiopacifiers, water, and methylcellulose 25 .…”

“…26 However, use of antibiotics subjects the patient at the risk of developing resistance. 27 Hence, the use of herbal alternatives having similar antibacterial action will prove to be more beneficial. The present study uses cinnamon extract as an intracanal medicament and compares its antibacterial efficacy with the most commonly used medicament calcium hydroxide.…”

“…Literature supports that triple antibiotic paste has a great significance in decreasing the 10.22442/jlumhs.191820615 intracanal bacteria and thereby relieving the symptoms. Endodontic literature confirms that the combination of antibiotic paste is very effective to evadicate bacteria from infected root canal system 8 . However, presence of minocycline in TAP formula causes crown discoloration which is a drawback associated with its use.…”
