Antibiotic and synthetic growth promoters in animal diets: Review of impact and analytical methods

Abstract: Food quality and safety have been a significant and pressing issue in recent years. In light of the FAO's definition of food security e the physical, social and economic access to sufficient and nutritious food e food safety plays a fundamental role. Animal feed and feeding is pivotal to the livestock industry, but the use of veterinary antibiotics (VAs) and synthetic growth promoters (SGP) diminishes the sustainability of the diets and can cause an accumulation of residues in animals (meat, milk and eggs) and… Show more

“…These consumers are rejecting the use of synthetic chemicals, such as those used in meat production, because their use is associated with human and animal health risks [3, 7]. In addition, producers are constantly warning of market failure due to the adoption of laws that prohibit the use of traditional growth promoters [8–10], such as antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) and the promoters used in the finishing stages.…”

“…However, dietary inclusion of AGPs had a negative effect on poultry such as the resistance of pathogenic bacteria in gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and antibiotic residue in poultry products (Huyghebaert et al, 2011). In 2006, AGPs was banned in the European Union countries (Ronquillo & Hernandez, 2017), followed by some ASEAN countries (Goutard et al, 2017) including Indonesia has also banned AGPs use for animal feed in early 2018 by implementation of the animal medicine classification act (MARI, 2017).…”

“…With the increasing appeal for the production of animal protein, the need to use veterinary drugs to optimize the production of animals in confinement arose (TASHO; CHO, 2016). The purpose and uses of veterinary drugs are diverse, being used both for therapeutic use and for the prevention and control of diseases, or even as promoters of animals' growth (CHENG et al, 2019;TASHO;CHO, 2016;GUO et al, 2016;GONZALEZ RONQUILLO;HERNANDEZ, 2015;GELBAND et al, 2015). Araujo et al (2010), report the existence of approximately 4,000 types of veterinary drugs, utilized for over 10,000 purposes.…”
