Antibiotic Resistance of Bacteria Associated with Community-Acquired Urinary Tract Infections in the Southern Area of the Gaza Strip

Abstract: The aim of this study was to identify the microorganisms that cause "community-acquired" urinary tract infections among adults and to investigate their resistance to fourteen selected antimicrobial agents. The uropathogens identified in 121 positive midstream urine cultures from the 270 subjects included in this study were Escherichia coli (57.9%), Proteus species (9.9%), Enterobacter species (7.4%), Klebsiella species (6.6%), Pseudomonas species (5.8%), Staphylococcus saprophyticus (5.0%), Enterococcus specie… Show more

“…Among the 27 isolates obtained, 17 were from females while 10 were from males. Similar observations were also recorded by Astal et al; [15] Khalifa et al; [16] and Ahmed et al [17] In this study, E. coli was the commonest UTI causative agent in 90% of the uncomplicated UTIs and in 78% of the complicated UTIs 50.1%. [18][19][20] Among females, age groups of 21-30 years followed by 11-20 and 31-40 years and among male's age group 31-40 were predominant age groups in terms of incidence.…”

“…Mortality from CA-Ab pneumonia has been reported from 11% [7] to 64% [2], with death often occurring in the first 48-72 h post-hospital admission [20]. Apart from acute pneumonia, a number of other infections have been reported in the past 30 years, including chronic pneumonia [64][65][66], meningitis [35,[67][68][69], soft-tissue infections [70], native valve endocarditis [25] and urinary tract infections [71,72].…”

“…The resistance of S. aureus isolates to commonly used antibiotics in Nigeria and other different parts of the world has been widely reported. [10][11][12][13][14][15][16] This increased emergence of resistant strains has being attributed to the indiscriminate use of antibiotics in both human and veterinary medicine especially in the developing countries. Since the emergence of S. aureus strains with resistance to methicillin shortly after its introduction into clinical medicine, 17 it has established itself as a leading agent for a wide range of infections.…”
