Antibody levels for cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus, and rubella in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome

Abstract: Significantly higher proportions of patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) or lymphadenopathy syndrome (LAS) were positive for antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV) and herpes simplex virus (HSV) compared with control groups of commercial blood donors. In contrast, no differences were found

“…However, the finding that AIDS-P. carinii pneumonitis patients, CPDs, and particularly homosexual males, had significantly lower anti-P. carinii titers was of interest. Significantly lower titers in AIDS-P. carinii pneumonitis patients were not anticipated because polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia has emerged as a prominent feature of AIDS (1, 7) and because antibody titers to both herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus have been reported to be elevated in AIDS patients (8). However, the findings in the present study are more consistent with those of Roberts (24), who described depressed antibody titers to Coccidioides immitis in patients with AIDS.…”

“…AIDS patients were included in this study because the severe immunosuppression caused by viral infection in the lymphocytes might influence the serologic response to CMV during the terminal stage when elevated levels of antibodies to CMV are found (7). The serologic picture was rather uniform, with all patients having CF antibodies to CMV.…”

“…Previous studies on serological responses to EBV and CMV in HIV positive patients demonstrated a high prevalence of specific antibodies and higher antibody titres as compared to HIV negative patients [Sumaya et al, 1986;Halbert et al, 19861. Nevertheless, these studies were based on the clinical assessment of patients and not on the absolute CD4 counts as prognostic indicators.…”
