Anticancer activity of lycopene in HT-29 colon cancer cell line

Abstract: Purpose: An inverse association between serum lycopene levels and risk of cancers has been pointed out by many prospective and retrospective epidemiological studies which prompted more studies to be performed on animal models and cell cultures in order to test this hypothesis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic effect of lycopene on colon cancer HT-29 cell lines.Materials and Methods: The effect of lycopene on the viability of HT-29 cell line was investigated u… Show more

“…Moreover, in “type II” cells, such as hepatocytes, the mitochondrial amplifying loop activates the effector caspase and then releases SMAC to downregulate XIAP expression to mitigate its mediated caspase inhibition ( 77 ). Previous studies have shown that lycopene reduced carcinogenesis by inhibiting the phosphatidyl-inositol 3-kinase/serine–threonine kinase (PI3K-AKT) signaling pathway, similarly, lycopene induced apoptosis by downregulating B, cell CLL/lymphoma-2 (BCL-2), and upregulating BAX ( 79 , 89 ). Previous records have shown that lycopene might increase the levels of Bax and E-cadherin and downregulate the levels of N-cadherin, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (p-PI3K), protein Kinase B (p-AKT), BCL-2, and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases (PI3K)/AKT/mammalian target of rapamycin (p-m-TOR).…”

“…Furthermore, in animal models of hepatocellular carcinoma, administered lycopene suppressed the onset and development of cancer [ 175 ]. In human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line, treatment with lycopene has shown to exhibit genotoxicity, antiproliferative, and apoptotic effects [ 176 ], a demonstration of its anticancer effects.…”

“…In rodents with various clinical diseases, such as diabetes, colchicine exposure, high-fat diet, and aging, lycopene also enhances cognition and memory. In addition, lycopene protects against neurotoxicity induced by organic and inorganic pollutants, such as methylmercury, tert-butyl hydroperoxide, and cadmium [ 23 , 24 , 25 ]. This provides theoretical support for using lycopene in future clinical, therapeutic, and pharmaceutical applications.…”
