Anticariogenic potential of white cheese, xylitol chewing gum, and black tea

Abstract: Objective:This study aimed to examine the effects of these foods on plaque pH and the potential development of tooth decay.Materials and Methods:Plaque pH was measured using the sampling method before and after 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 45, and 60 min following consumption of these foods individually and after rinsing with a 10% sucrose solution. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey honestly significant difference post hoc tests (α = 0.05).Results:Although there were statistically significa… Show more

“…Also, Balappanavar's study showed that tea mouthwash increases salivary pH, as pH shifts to alkaline range [22]. Other studies showed a significant increase in salivary pH after consumption of black tea, could be related to buffering capacity of this plant [23][24][25]. Correspondingly, in our study using black tea raised salivary pH; however, this effect was remarkably less than that of green tea.…”

“…Several studies investigated intake of individual nutrients such as vitamin D . More commonly, studies investigated single components, such as starch, milk, cheese, or tea . Together these studies focused on the bioavailability, buffering capacity, consumption frequency, and retentive properties of these individual foods.…”

“…Several studies investigated intake of individual nutrients such as vitamin D. 3 More commonly, studies investigated single components, such as starch, 4 milk, 5 cheese, 6 or tea. 7 Together these studies focused on the bioavailability, buffering capacity, consumption frequency, and retentive properties of these individual foods. An alternative approach is to conduct an assessment of the quality of the diet as a whole, considering the overall pattern of food groups consumed rather than the macronutrients alone.…”

“…This condition may arise after abdominal surgery, mostly those surgeries that involve the colon. Also many studies have proposed the anticariogenic effect of the sugar free chewing gum (Gul et al, 2018) [42] .…”
