Point-of-care testing (POCT) is laboratory testing performed at or near the site of patient care. POCT occurs in a variety of clinical sites within and outside the hospital, including emergency departments, patient floors, operating rooms, clinics, and physician offices. As hospitals increasingly become merged or acquired, networks of health care facilities face the growing challenge of managing patient care activities across the network. When possible, standardizing these activities offers a multitude of advantages if done correctly. POCT programs are being developed across health care networks to provide a standardized approach for delivering rapid results to patients outside the laboratory. Selection and evaluation of devices, implementation, training, policies and procedures, quality control, connectivity, compliance, oversight, and documentation are components of a POC program that can be incorporated into a standardized, systemwide POC program.
