Antidepressant-like effect of Cuminum cyminum essential oil on the forced swim and tail suspension tests in male mice

Abstract: Background and aims: Several pharmacological and biological activities have been attributed to Cuminum cyminum L. (CC), including analgesic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-epileptic effects. In this regard, the present study evaluated the antidepressant-like effects of the CC essential oil (EO) on the forced swim test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST) in male mice. Materials and Methods: The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) apparatus was used for detecting the chemical compounds of CC … Show more

“…11,26 The γ-terpinene (4.4%), another major component of CREOs, has also shown antidepressant activity in previous experiments. 27,28 Moreover, β-caryophyllene, present in lower proportion in CREOs, has also been found to significantly improve depression-like effects. 29 These findings demonstrate the potential of CREOs as an effective antidepressant.…”

“…Also, GPx acts as a donor to eliminate ROS and inhibiting oxidative damage to neurons and oligodendrocytes (Vodjgani et al 2020). Therefore, antioxidants and anti-in ammatory agents have valuable in the prevention and treatment of the MS (Asadi et al 2020). As seen, coadministration of the CPZ + crocin signi cantly improved adverse effect of the CPZ on serum antioxidants.…”

“…The lowest antioxidant activity and highest neuro-inflammation were seen in people with depression (Moghadam, 2016). Thus, administering antioxidants is useful for treating depression (Asadi et al, 2020). Terpenes are low molecular weight compounds and high lipophilicity permeable to the blood-brain barrier (Ghosh et al, 2021).…”
