Antidepressant-Like Effects of Lindera obtusiloba Extracts on the Immobility Behavior of Rats in the Forced Swim Test

Abstract: Lindera obtusiloba extracts are commonly used as an alternative medicine due to its numerous health benefits in Korea. However, the antidepressant-like effects of L. obtusiloba extracts have not been fully elucidated. In this study, we aimed to determine whether L. obtusiloba extracts exhibited antidepressant-like activity in rats subjected to forced swim test (FST)-induced depression. Acute treatment of rats with L. obtusiloba extracts (200 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly reduced immobility time and increased swim… Show more

“…In accordance with their stress-induced endocrine effects, mifepristone, CORT 108297, and imipramine all decrease depression-like behavior in the FST [10,11,18,19]. Interestingly, while MR antagonism with spironolactone produces similar behavioral phenotypes in mice [20], it increases basal and stress-induced glucocorticoid levels in rodents and humans [21,22].…”

“…Ethnopharmacological reports revealed that L. obtusiloba has been used in the treatment of allergic diseases, including rhinitis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis [ 9 ]. In addition, studies also indicated that L. obtusiloba has antidepressant effects [ 10 ], antifibrotic [ 11 ], neuroprotective [ 12 ], anti-inflammatory [ 13 ], and antihepatotoxic effects [ 14 ]. However, works on the efficacy and scientific evaluation of L. obtusiloba on microglia-mediated neuroinflammation and cognitive impairments have not been studied.…”
