Introduction: Diabetes is a debilitating disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, which is rapidly r eaching endemic proportions throughout the world including Bangladesh. We had previously evaluated the antihyperglycemic potential of methanolic extract of aerial parts of Spilanthes calva and tubers of Colocasia esculenta. The objective of this study was to determine whether there is any synergistic antihyperglycemic activity between the methanolic extracts of the plant parts of the two plants.Methods: Antihyperglycemic activity and synergistic potential were determined through oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) in mice.Result: Administration of methanolic extract of aerial parts of S. calva (MESC) at a dose of 400 mg per kg body weight led to lowering of blood glucose levels in glucose-loaded mice in OGTT by 41.6%. At the same dose, methanolic extract of tubers of C. esculenta (MECE) lowered blood glucose levels by 25.1%. At doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg each of (MESC + MECE), blood glucose levels in mice were lowered, respectively, by 38.8, 43.0, and 49.5%. At the highest dose of the combination, the reductions in blood glucose were comparable to that of a standard antihyperglycemic drug, glibenclamide, which when administered at a dose of 10 mg per kg lowered blood glucose by 52.2%. Conclusion:Synergistic antihyperglycemic activity was observed between aerial parts of S. calva and tubers of C. esculenta in oral glucose tolerance tests. The combination has the potential to be a substitute for glibenclamide.

INTRODUCTIONTridax procumbens (family-Asteraceae) is commonly known as "Ghamra". In English it is popularly called as "coat buttons" because of the appearance of the flowers. It has been extensively used in Ayurvedic system of medicine for various illnesses. It is a well known medicine for liver disorders.1 This plant extract know to express various pharmacologically active compounds which has been shown to have roll in immunomodulatory, hypoglycemic, hepatoprotective action. It was also shown antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-arthritic and wound healing effect and have been used as a skeletal muscle relaxant.2-9 The phytochemical screening of the different plant parts like leaf, stem, flower and root of Tridax have revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids (catechins and flavones) and tannins. 10,11 Phytochemicals are chemical compounds, created or biosynthesized through the usual metabolic pathways in the plants. These chemicals are often referred to as secondary metabolites. These secondary metabolites have no direct activity in the primary metabolic cycles, such as photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration and mineral metabolism etc. But they have been proved to have major roles in the stress tolerance and defense mechanisms.12 Secondary metabolites are important for the plants interactions such as plant-pollinator, plant-pathogen and plant-herbivore. These are classified into three major classes (alkaloids, terpenoids and phenolics) and habitually colored, aromatic and tasty compounds.13 They are also used in signaling and regulation of primary metabolic pathways. Secondary metabolites are used by many pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, biopesticides, flavoring, coloring agents, and as food additives.14 The biosynthesis of secondary metabolites is controlled by various factors such as genetics and ecological factors. 15The quantity of secondary metabolites in medicinal plants is strongly dependent on the growing conditions and synthesis is regulated by external environmental stimuli 16 Abiotic factors such as high and low temperatures, drought, alkalinity, salinity of the soil, ultraviolet radiation stresses have been known as more potential factors for manipulating and promoting the accumulations of secondary metabolites in medicinal plants. [17][18][19] The abiotic factors of the growing area such as soil fertility, local geoclimate, humidity, light and temperature, seasonal changes and cultivation techniques, have also been shown to impact on the metabolism and synthesis of the secondary metabolites. 20 Hence the aim of the study to investigates the habitats influences on in-vitro antioxidant activities and the quantity of phytochemical (total phenol, flavonoid and tannin) variations in leaves and flowers of Tridax. Tridax procumbens is a very promising species that produces secondary metabolites reported to have a variety of medicinal uses including among others, anti-anemic, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and anesthetic properties. This species has a long history of traditional use by different communities. This study aimed to review the scientific literature regarding the medicinal properties, biological activity and phytochemical components of T. procumbens, a member of the Asteraceae family that originated in Central and South America. An extensive literature review was done using Metadatabase EDS, MedLine (PubMed), Science Direct, Web of Science, Academic Search Premier, Scielo, DOAJ Directory of Open Access Journals, JSTOR, and other sources to find information relevant to the medicinal uses of T. procumbens. At total of 130 studies were found that contained information about T. procumbens. Some of the papers were not included because of the relevance to this study, ending with a total of 111 relevant citations reported here. This review shows the importance of more studies to understand the potential of T. procumbens' secondary metabolites for medicinal or preventive treatment, making it a promising ethnobotanical resource. This review provides important information of this species and indicates that this species could be an effective, safe and affordable treatment for some ailments, especially in tropical areas where this plant is native and widely distributed.
