Antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic effects of an ethanolic extract of the whole plant of Tridax procumbens (Linn.) in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Abstract: Objective:To study the antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic effects of an ethanolic extract of the whole plant of Tridax procumbens (Asteraceae) in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.Materials and Methods:The whole plant of T. procumbens was collected in different regions of Madurai districts, Tamil Nadu. The air dried whole plant of T. procumbens was extracted with ethanol (95%) in a Soxhlet apparatus for 72 h. Diabetes was induced in male Wistar rats by streptozotocin (50 mg/jk, i.p.) and nicotinamide (120 … Show more

“…The ameliorative potential of C. esculenta tubers on renal and liver growths in streptozotocin diabetic rats has been reported [22] [24]. The antihyperglycemic activity of petroleum ether extract of leaves of Ficus krishnae has been reported; the crude extract was found to contain alkaloids, fl avonoids, and tannins [25].…”

“…It was also shown antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-arthritic and wound healing effect and have been used as a skeletal muscle relaxant. [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] The phytochemical screening of the different plant parts like leaf, stem, flower and root of Tridax have revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids (catechins and flavones) and tannins. 10,11 Phytochemicals are chemical compounds, created or biosynthesized through the usual metabolic pathways in the plants.…”

“…The presence of procumbenetin and other flavonoids in Tridax seem to decrease the deposition of calcium and oxalate in the kidneys (Sailaja et al, 2012). This secondary metabolite seems to help regenerate damaged beta cells of the pancreas (Petchi et al, 2013). Evaluation of an aqueous extract of T. procumbens for its effect on diabetic rats showed hypoglycemic activity (assumed from flavonoids), protection against oxidative stress (probably due to high content of ascorbic acid) and lowering of VLDL cholesterol (probably due to the flavonoids) (Ikewuchi, 2012).…”

“…Another study determined that saponins from an ethanolic extract of T. procumbens could potentially contain antidiabetic properties by inhibiting the sodium glucose co-transporter-1 (S-GLUT-1) in the intestines of male Wistar albino rats (Petchi et al, 2013).…”
