Antidiabetic Effect of Essential Oil from Artemisia sieberi Growing in Jordan in Normal and Alloxan Induced Diabetic Rats

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of essential oil extracted from aerial parts of Artemisia sieberi in normal and alloxan induced diabetic rats. Fifty rats were divided into five groups of 10 each. Group I normal rats received 1 mL day(-1) of dimethyl sulfoxide (control); group II normal rats received a single dose (80 mg kg(-1) b.wt.) of essential oil extract of Artemisia sieberi; group III diabetic rats received 1 mL day-of dimethyl sulfoxide; group IV diabetic rats received the oil extract (… Show more

“…In addition, body weight loss and fatigue can also result due to loss of fluid. The animals should increase food and water intake to compensate for loss of body weight and fluid as a consequence to such changes (Irshaid et al, 2010). On other hand, the present data also revealed that treatment of diabetic rats with Turmeric and Black cumin seed mixture appears to have positive effects on body weight gain as well as in reduction of both food and water intake.…”

“…These findings further support the fact that the most classic symptoms for diabetes mellitus are Polyuria, Polydipsia and Polyphagia. Poor or defect of glucose utilization can also lead to weight loss and sense of fatigue despite of normal or even increased of food intake (Irshaid et al, 2010). In addition, body weight loss and fatigue can also result due to loss of fluid.…”

“…Essential oils are known to be antioxidants and have several medicinal properties. Reports have supported the use of antioxidant compounds derived from plant extracts in the therapy of diabetes mellitus (Giugliano and others ; Ceriello and others ; Penckofer and others ; Ceriello ; Rahimi and others ; Irshaid and others , ). In a recent study, Rodriguez‐Lopez and others () isolated a natural product, 6‐acetyl‐5‐hydroxy‐2, 2‐dimethyl‐2H—chromene (C13H14O3) from B. cavanillesii .…”

“…Gharaibeh et al [40] investigated the hypoglycaemic effects of the aqueous extract of Teucrium polium in normal and streptozocin (STZ)-diabetic rats. Additionally, the hypoglycaemic effects of Ballota nigra [41] and Artemisia sieberi [42] were evidenced in alloxan-diabetic rats. Also, the antioxidative properties of an extensive list of Jordanian plants with diabetes ethnotherapeutic claims were closely discussed [43].…”
