Antidiarrheal Activity of Methanolic Extract of Rumex nervosus

Abstract: Rumex nervosus vahl leaves were evaluated for antidiarrheal potential against experimental models of diarrhea in mice and rats. Methanolic extract of leaves of Rumex nervosus vahl (LRN) was evaluated against charcoal meal test in mice and castor oil induced diarrhea in rats. LRN was given at two different doses of 0.5 g/kg p.o and 1 gm/kg p.o. The effects obtained were compared with atropine (5 mg/kg s.c). LRN (1 gm/kg p.o) produced significant reduction in gastrointestinal motility following charcoal meal in … Show more

“…The anti-diarrheal activity of RN may be attributed to therapeutic effects such as intestinal motility reduction and direct anti-coccidial activity. It may be due to the fact that RN contains a higher amount of the flavonoid compound “quercetin”, which hinders the release of acetylcholine into the digestive tract, an assumption supported by similar claims made by [ 54 ].…”

“…described the antimicrobial effect of a crude extract of R. nervosus and Rumex abyssinicus on Staphylococcus and Streptococcus strains while the antiviral effect on Coxsackie and influenza was very much pronounced. [ 11 ] The organic extracts of these plants are also used in physiological disorders such as antidiarrheal agent,[ 7 ] antioxidant, and cytotoxicity studies. [ 12 ] Present study complemented the previous findings that the crude extracts of R. nervosus were indeed inhibitory to the growth of microorganisms.…”

“…[ 5 ] The methanolic extract of the root and leaves of this plant was also found to be effective in the treatment of helminthiasis[ 6 ] and diarrhea induced in mice. [ 7 ] Other plants belonging to the genus Rumex are also used as anti-tumor agents in different tumor cell lines from colon, ovary, melanoma, breast, and central nervous system. [ 8 9 ]…”

“…Some reports in literature about the biological activities of Rumex nervosus Vahl. ; Analgesic [39], anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity [33], urease enzyme inhibition [40], anthelmintic [41], anti-diarrheal activity [42], anti-bacterial activity [28], anti-oxidant activity [43], acute-toxicity and analgestic activity [44], anti-leishmanial, insecticidal and phytotoxic potential [45] and in vitro anticancer, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities [46]. The methanol, water and chloroform extracts of the leaf, bark, stem and root parts of R. nervosus and the root of R. abyssinicus were reported to possess antibacterial activity against several bacteria including S. aureus and P. aeruginosa [35].…”
