Antifungal and anticancer effects of a polysaccharide-protein complex from the gut bacteriumRaoultella ornithinolyticaisolated from the earthwormDendrobaena veneta

Abstract: The polysaccharide-protein complex (PPC) isolated from metabolites of gut bacteria Raoultella ornithinolytica from Dendrobaena veneta earthworms exhibits activity against Candida albicans, in breast ductal carcinoma (line T47D) and in the endometrioid ovarian cancer line (TOV-112D) in vitro. The action against C. albicans was analyzed using light, SEM, TEM, and AFM microscopes. The changes observed indicated two directions of the action of the complex, that is, disturbance of metabolic activity and cell wall d… Show more

“…This is not the first observation of the selective action of compounds derived from D. veneta earthworm against tumor cells but not against normal cells. Earlier reports demonstrated the selective anticancer activity (toward HeLa, T47D, and TOV-112D cell lines) of complexes obtained from metabolites produced by symbiotic intestinal bacteria of this species (40,41). However, the metabolites were obtained outside the earthworm body in laboratory conditions.…”

“…The MTT cytotoxicity assay was used to determine the cytotoxicity of unheated and heated (40,50,60,70,80, and 90°C for 10 min) CF. A549 non-small cell lung carcinoma from the European Collection of Cell Cultures (ECACC, Salisbury, UK) catalog number 86012804 and BEAS-2B bronchial epithelial cell line ATCC CRL-9609 kindly provided by Dr. D.…”

“…In addition, higher concentrations of earthworm extracts are nontoxic and have excellent antiinflammatory and antipyretic properties [7] . Further researches have revealed the potential for using earthworm extracts as antibacterial [8] , antifungal [9] , antiviral [10] and antitumor [8,9] agents. In this study, earthworms were studied to determine their active components used in the traditional prescriptions as starting materials.…”

“…Regarding its anti-cancer activity, the polysaccharide-protein complex isolated from metabolites of bacteria inhibiting gut of Raoultella ornithinolytica earthworms have anti-fungal and anticancer activity against breast ductal carcinoma and endometrioid ovarian cancer in vitro (Fiołka et al 2013). Furthermore, earthworm aqueous extracts have been utilized in the green synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs).…”
