Antifungal and antiproliferative activities of endophytic fungi isolated from the leaves of Markhamia tomentosa

Abstract: Context: Plants harbor endophytes with potential bioactivity. Markhamia tomentosa (Benth) K. Schum ex. Engl. (Bignoniaceae) is reported to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities. Objective: The antifungal and antiproliferative properties of endophytic fungi extracts and fractions from M. tomentosa were evaluated.Material and methods: Endophytic fungi were isolated from the leaves of M. tomentosa and identified by ITS-rDNA sequence analysis. The antagonistic effect of the fungal strains… Show more

“…From the processed leaves, endophytic fungal isolation was carried out on potato dextrose agar (PDA) (potato infusion form 200 g/L, dextrose 20 g/L, agar 15 g/L, pH 5.6 ± 0.2) as per previous method. 30 Here, the last wash of surface sterilization was spread plated on PDA as control to check the surface sterility. Both the isolation and control plates were further incubated at 28 C for 10 days and the obtained fungal isolates were purified by sub-culturing.…”

“…In both these assays, formation of an inhibition halo after incubation around the spots reveals the antifungal activity. A dual culture technique has also been used to test the antagonistic effect of a potential antifungal mold against a target mold, in which agar plugs containing the target and the antifungal molds, respectively, were inoculated at the opposite sides over an agar plate [ 70 , 72 ]. Another screening approach corresponds to the investigation of the enzymatic activities required to degrade the cell wall of the fungal target as shown by Tokpah et al (2016) that screened bacteria for control of a rice pathogen, Magnaporthe grisea .…”

“…Antifungal activity has been detected in a diversity of living organisms including microbes, animals and plants, and antifungal peptides have been isolated from them [13,14,15]. For the sake of safety and availability, in our search for antifungal peptides, we have looked more at plants that have long been used as foods.…”
