Antigen Levels of Dermatophagoides Mites (Acari: Pyroglyphidae) in Dust Samples Collected in Homes of Allergic Patients

Abstract: A medical service system for testing antigen levels of Dermatophagoides farinae Hughes and D. pteronyssinus (Trouessart) mites in house dust was established to allow physicians to monitor the environment of patients with allergies. Dust samples were collected from a 1-m2 area at different sites for 1 min using a commercial collection apparatus attached to a vacuum cleaner. Extracts from fine dust fractions were processed quantitatively for antigen by a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Mean antigen l… Show more

“…A paternal or maternal history of asthma, atopic eczema and allergic rhinitis was defined as positive if the respective parent had been treated with medications for any of these allergic disorders at some time prior to the start of the survey. Antigen levels from extracts of fine dust fractions were determined by a commercially available simple semi‐quantitative test (Mitey checker ® ; Shinto Fine Co., Ltd, Osaka, Japan) (20, 21). Mitey checker ® is a double‐antibody sandwich enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay using a soluble antigen prepared from whole Dermatophagoides farinae mite bodies as a reference standard.…”

“…Antigen levels from extracts of fine dust fractions were measured by a double‐antibody sandwich enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay using a soluble antigen prepared from whole Dermatophagoides farinae mite bodies as a reference standard and were expressed as antigen equivalent in μ g/m 2 of surface area (Mitey checker®, Shinto Fine Co., Ltd, Osaka, Japan; 9, 10). Antigen levels were semiquantitatively classified with scores of − (<2 μ g/m 2 ), ± (5 μ g/m 2 ), + (10–15 μ g/m 2 ), and ++ (>35 μ g/m 2 ).…”
