“…has already been well documented (Albas et al, 2011;Guarino et al, 2013;Kobayashi et al, 2007Kobayashi et al, , 2005Menozzi, Oliveira, Paiz, Richini-Pereira, & Langoni, 2017;Oliveira et al, 2010). “…Although interspecific contacts of this type (marmosets and bats) have not been reported to date in the natural environment, this type of interaction must have occurred at some point in the past. Spillover of different several RABV lineages between bat species has already been well documented (Albas et al, ; Guarino et al, ; Kobayashi et al, ; Menozzi, Oliveira, Paiz, Richini‐Pereira, & Langoni, ; Oliveira et al, ). Crossing of the interspecific bat–marmoset barrier has been reported previously and in this report.…”

“…In northern Uruguay, there have been recent outbreaks of rabies in cattle in locations proximate to the border with RGS (Guarino et al, 2013). Although neighboring bat populations in RGS are the most likely source, other populations farther north could also be potentially contributing migrants to Uruguay based on the widespread distribution of the D2 haplotype.…”

“…Although neighboring bat populations in RGS are the most likely source, other populations farther north could also be potentially contributing migrants to Uruguay based on the widespread distribution of the D2 haplotype. In this respect, it is interesting to consider that genetic studies of the rabies virus in the region have shown that the strains from Uruguay (from the 2007 outbreak, Guarino et al, 2013) were related to strains from the mountainous area of São Paulo and Minas Gerais States (lineages R2/R3, see Itou et al, 2016). Therefore, further sampling of vampire bat populations and nuclear markers are needed to ascertain if local populations in Uruguay consist of unique or multiple lineages originated from multiple populations in RGS.…”

“…Después de 25 años, sin relatos de casos de rabia en Uruguay, Guarino et al (2013) documentaron una epizootia de rabia en herbívoros identificando las variantes AgV3, de D. rotundus, como causante del brote, además de dos variantes adicionales: AgV4 y otra no tipificada, procedente de murciélago no hematófago.…”
