Antimicrobial actions of dual oxidases and lactoperoxidase

Abstract: The NOX/DUOX family of NADPH oxidases are transmembrane proteins generating reactive oxygen species as their primary enzymatic products. NADPH oxidase (NOX) 1-5 and Dual oxidase (DUOX) 1 and 2 are members of this family. These enzymes have several biological functions including immune defense, hormone biosynthesis, fertilization, cell proliferation and differentiation, extracellular matrix formation and vascular regulation. They are found in a variety of tissues such as the airways, salivary glands, colon, thy… Show more

“…However, overproduction of H 2 O 2 could lead to oxidative stress resulting in oxidative injuries and mucosal barrier impairment [20]. In addition to its role in the persistent and recurrent inflammatory of UC, the DUOXA2/DUOX2 pathway is also involved in the development of UC-associated adenomas and colorectal cancer [21][22][23]. We supposed that SLC6A14 and DUOXA2 aberrantly expressed might promote the initiation and development of UC.…”

“…Under normal conditions, most NOX isoforms have very low or no constitutive activity but their expression can be increased after pathogens' invasion. Under these conditions, the activated NOXs can generate high ROS levels leading to increased oxidative stress (Sarr et al, 2018). Oxidative stress commonly is used as a defense mechanism for killing foreign microorganisms (Xiong et al, 2018).…”

“…Lactoperoxidase was found in mucosal surfaces and exocrine secretions including milk, tears, and saliva, and in nasal and lung airway fluids. LPO is a major contributor to airway defenses and to the antimicrobial properties of exocrine gland secretions [ 33 , 36 , 138 , 139 ].…”
