Antimicrobial activity and chemical constituents of essential oils and oleoresins extracted from eight pepper species

Abstract: Essential oils are the most important compounds produced during secondary metabolism in aromatic plants. Essential oils are volatile, have characteristic odor and are used as defensive agents by plants. In pepper, it is possible to say that essential oils are the “flavor fingerprint” of each species. In the present article, eight species of pepper were studied in order to extract their essential oils and oleoresins, test their antibacterial and antifungal activities and also to identify the compounds present i… Show more

“…The utilization of V. album in traditional medicine implies that it can also be used in modern medicine, especially in cancer and cardiovascular diseases (Gray & Flatt 1999). According to epidemiological studies, essential oil and phenolic compounds have inhibitive effects against the progress of bacterial infections (Ghuman et al 2016, Martinelli et al 2017. GC-MS chromatogram analysis of leaf extracts of V. album showed different peaks, which indicates the presence of 8 main phytochemical constituents ( Fig.…”

“…Essential oils and oleoresins are known to present a broad spectrum of action, including antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity. Even though the antimicrobial mechanism of action of essential oils and oleoresins is not fully understood, it is believed that the activity occurs due to their hydrophobicity (Martinelli et al, 2017;Rosa et al, 2018).…”

“…Essential oils have been applied for centuries in pharmaceuticals and alternative medicine. They are effective as antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and as anti-cancer (Bakkali et al, 2008;Tarawneh et al, 2010;Benelli et al, 2017;Burt, 2004;Martinelli et al, 2017). Essential oils are secondary metabolites produced by aromatic plant families such as Apiaceae and Lamiaceae.…”
