Antimicrobial activity of bacteriocin‐producing Carnobacterium spp. isolated from healthy Patagonian trout and their potential for use in aquaculture

Abstract: Aquaculture, which represents 47% of global fish production, is quickly becoming the primary source of fish for human consumption (FAO, 2018). However, aquaculture development faces a number of challenges, such as climate change and increased disease rates (FAO, 2018). Thus, the intensification of culture systems to meet the growing global demand has led to the emergence of bacterial diseases with substantial economic losses for farmers (Hoseinifar, Sun, Wang, & Zhou, 2018). Antibiotics have been widely used i… Show more

“…LAB may serve as biological food preservatives due to the antimicrobial activity of their metabolites, such as organic acids (mainly lactic acid and acetic acid), biocides À carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), lysozyme, phenyllactic acid, fatty acids, antibiotics (reuterocyclin) or bacteriocins (Stoyanova et al, 2012;Kaktcham et al, 2018;Gong et al, 2019;Garcés et al, 2020).…”

“…ability to produce antimicrobial bacteriocins, which may serve to both inhibit pathogenic bacteria and help the Carnobacteria to survive within the competitive environment of the gut microbiome [37]. However, the ability of probiotic Carnobacterium to inhibit different pathogenic species is known to vary by strain [32,37]. As a type of LAB, Carnobacteria are also capable of lactic acid production, which may also have an inhibitory effect on pathogens.…”

“…TSA plates were incubated at room temperature (28-30°C) for 24h and inoculated MRS plates were incubated at room temperature (28-30°C) for 48-72h. Bacterial colonies with different shapes, characteristics and colors were selected from TSA agar, while colonies with clear zones on MRS agar were selected as candidate probiotics bacteria (Garcés et al 2020).…”
