Antimicrobial activity of bovine psoriasin

Abstract: 27Human psoriasin (S100A7) has originally been described as a member of the family of S100 28 calcium-binding proteins which is overexpressed in patients suffering from psoriasis. The 29 bovine homolog was first identified as a cow-derived respiratory allergen. As Escherichia 30 coli-mastitis is a common problem in dairy cattle, and human psoriasin was found to exhibit 31 antimicrobial activity preferentially against E. coli, we examined whether the bovine mRNA 32 is expressed in the mammary gland. The antimi… Show more

“…Our findings are in agreement with these reports, and further suggest that the impediment in epithelial defenses in SIV infection also manifests in reduced production of psoriasin and other AMPs that presumably regulate the microbiota. It is also worth noting that the bactericidal activity of psoriasin is highly specific to E. coli [56], raising the possibility that the loss of psoriasin may have contributed to the colonization of E. coli on the tongue dorsum of one of the SIV infected macaques (Fig. 4).…”

“…These strongly suggests that b-defensin has a crucial role on the local defense system in mammary glands. S100A7 (S100 CALCIUM BINDING PROTEIN A7) S100A7 (psoriasin) is a Ca-binding protein and one of the antimicrobial factors that exhibit antimicrobial activity against E. coli in humans (Glaser et al 2005) and bovines (Regenhard et al 2009). S100A7 was first identified in the epithelial cells of human psoriatic skin (Madsen et al 1991;Al-Haddad et al 1999) and is secreted by breast cancer cells (Enerback et al 2002) and psoriatic keratinocytes (Madsen et al 1991).…”

“…Psoriasin (S100A7) is one of the peptides that exhibit antimicrobial activity against E. coli in humans (Glaser et al, 2005) and cattle (Regenhard et al, 2009). However, the mechanism of the antimicrobial action of S100A7 remains unclear (Gallo & Hooper, 2012).…”
