ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACTS FROM Commiphora leptophloeos (MART.) J. B. GILLETT AGAINST Staphylococcus SPP. ISOLATED FROM CASES OF MASTITIS IN RUMINANTS

Abstract: Considering the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants as alternatives to antibiotic therapy, the research aims to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of Commiphora leptophloeos against isolates of Staphylococcus spp. from the milk of ruminants with subclinical mastitis. For this, the crude ethanolic extract from the bark and leaves of Commiphora leptophloeos was prepared, with these being chemically characterized by HPLC-DAD-MS and by MALDI-TOF. The extracts were then evaluated as to their antimicrobial ef… Show more

“…from the milk of ruminants with SCM was evaluated. The extracts of the bark and leaves at a concentration of 781.2 μg/mL were able to interfere with the initial stages of biofilm formation; however, there was no interference of the extract on the established biofilm [ 34 ]. There was a high sensitivity of Staphylococcus spp.…”

“…There was a high sensitivity of Staphylococcus spp. isolates from SCM cases in ruminants when subjected to the extracts from the bark and leaves of C. leptophloeos , with respect to the ability of extracts to interfere in biofilm formation, indicating their potential in use for ruminant mastitis therapy [ 34 ].…”

“…Phytochemical screening studies published in the literature have indicated the presence of tannins in different C. leptophloeos stem bark extracts ( Trentin et al, 2011 ; Chaves et al, 2016 ; Lima et al, 2017 ). However, the results have not been well understood particularly with respect to the class of tannins, and only few studies have managed to perform a complete phytochemical characterization of these compounds ( Trentin et al, 2013 ; Pereira et al, 2017 ; Da Silva et al, 2019 ). To date, quantitative phytochemical data on the species remain scarce.…”

“…To date, few studies published in the literature have investigated the phytochemical and pharmacological properties of the stem bark of C. leptophloeos . Most non-clinical studies published in the literature have been mainly confined to investigating the antibacterial and antibiofilm activities, as well as the chemical composition of C. leptophloeos ; these studies have reported the presence of phenolic acids, O - and C -glycosylated flavonoids, lignans, and A- and B-type polymeric proanthocyanidins in C. leptophloeos , where the identified compounds have been related to therapeutic activities of the plant species ( Trentin et al, 2013 ; Pereira et al, 2017 ; Da Silva et al, 2019 ; Dantas-Medeiros et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Os inibidores possuem uma estrutura idêntica à penicilina, modificando apenas a cadeia lateral. Desta forma as β-lactamases atuam nos inibidores, de forma a deixar disponível o antibiótico para a atuar na infecção em causa (DA SILVA et al, 2019). (DUARTE et al, 2019).…”
