Background The unique and vast pharmacological activities of flavonoids have made them of research interest. This led to the use of various techniques to isolate and characterize them, intending to determine their potential health benefits. Main text The medicinal values of plant-based flavonoids that this literature review tends to summarize the pharmacological activities of these secondary metabolites from 22 selected plant families. The pharmacological shreds of evidence reported in the literature have proven that flavonoids have shown anti-cancer, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-ulcer, and anti-edematogenic activities. Out of these, 30% showed to have anti-oxidant activity, key in protecting the body against free radicals. Besides, 18% of the references showed anti-microbial and anti-cancer activities. Further literature reports indicated that flavonoids from these families exhibited anti-inflammatory and anti-edematogenic (9%), anti-viral and anti-ulcer (5%), anti-fungal, anti-nociceptive, and anti-histamine (2%). Conclusion The pharmacological activities of flavonoids from the various sources reviewed in this study show that the secondary metabolites could provide a scaffold for the development of potent anti-cancer drugs in the future.

Antifungal Activities of Some Plant Extracts against Pathogenic Fungi

Soil samples were collected from different localities in Cairo, and were assayed for keratinophilic fungi. Five species of fungi classified in two genera were isolated from Giza zoo (animal cages and parks), hospital, public park, local market, primary school, club, and garbage dumping site. Five plants were chosen to investigate their antifungal activity against five isolated dermatophytes: Microsporum gypseum, Microsporum boullardii, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton terrsetre, and Trichophyton verrucosum. The tested plants were Punica granatum (Pomegranate), Aloe vera, Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel), Allium ampeloprasum var. Kurrat (kurrat), and Ricinus communis (Castor bean). Plant extracts were prepared by three different solvents, hexane, ethyl acetate, and (80%) ethanol. The study shows that ethanolic extract of Punica granatum (Pomegranate), hexane, and ethanolic extract of Allium ampeloprasum var. Kurrat (kurrat) were effective against most of the tested organisms. Ethanolic extract of pomegranate and hexane extract of kurrat were chromatographed by column chromatography. Fractions from column chromatography were tested for antifungal activity. Ethyl acetate: ethanol (9:1) fraction of pomegranate (Punica granatum) and hexane: ethyl acetate (1:9) fraction of kurrat (Allium ampeloprasum var. Abstract: Background: Most of the available antimicrobial drugs have developed resistance; some of them suffer from severe toxicity, side effects. So, there is a need to discover novel compound(s) which should not only be potent, but also less toxic and cost effective.
