Antimicrobial Activity of Several Calcium Hydroxide Preparations in Root Canal Dentin

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of several calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) preparations in root canal dentin infected with Enterococcus faecalis. Roots of extracted bovine incisors were prepared to standardized cylindrical test specimens of 5 mm in height; the smear layer was removed, and the specimens were incubated for 24 h at 37 degrees C in bacteriological culture medium that contained 7.0 x 10(4) colony forming units per milliliter of E. faecalis. The specimens were mounte… Show more

“…methylcellulose system resulted in significantly better antibacterial effects against various endodontic pathogens in comparison to higher concentrations of Ca(OH) 2 pastes prepared without methylcellulose (30,31). It is also worth noting that methylcellulose is frequently used as culture media for stem cell growth and differentiation due to its noncytotoxic nature (32).…”

“…7 Though most of the studies have been conducted to study the release of OH ions and their effect on periapical pH and repair, a very few discuss about the Ca ion release and its role in periapical healing. 8,9 Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effect of various vehicles and delivery techniques on the pH of the paste and release of Ca ions from the apical one-third of the root canals using an atomic spectrophotometer.…”
