ANTIMICROBIAL AND ANTIOXIDANT COMPOUNDS FROM THE INFUSION AND METHANOLIC EXTRACT OF Baccharis incarum (WEDD.) PERKINS

Abstract: In the traditional medicine of the South American highlands, the infusion and decoction of aerial parts of "tola", Baccharis incarum (Wedd.) Perkins (Asteraceae) is orally taken as an antiseptic, antipyretic and digestive or externally applied to relieve pain and inflammation.A plant infusion and methanolic (MeOH) extract of the aerial parts were compared for main constituents by HPLC-MS as well as assessed for antimicrobial and free radical scavenging activities. Assay-guided fractionation of the polar extrac… Show more

“…The antioxidant activity found in Fabiana species was similar to the obtained activity of other shrubs species that grow in mountainous area of Argentina such as Baccharis incarum (Zampini et al, 2009b), Chuquiraga atacamensis, Parastrephia lucida (Zampini et al, 2008) and Zuccagnia punctata (Morán Vieyra et al, 2009). These plants are characterized by a high physiological plasticity not only for their salt tolerance limits, but also for the UV-radiations.…”

“…Figures A, B show the chromatograms of the tincture and the profiles of receptor solution of formulation, respectively. Previous phytochemical studies on the aerial parts of the polar extract of B. incarum described the isolation of chlorogenic acid and flavones (Zampini et al ., ). Chlorogenic acid and 4′,5‐dihydroxy‐3′,3,6,7,8‐pentamethoxyflavone were also identified in the receptor solution of formulation.…”

“…The results were expressed as gallic acid equivalent (GAE) per mL and quercetin equivalent (QE) per mL, respectively. The HPLC fingerprint was also performed to standardize the extract (Zampini et al ., ).…”

“…Consequently, alternative therapies are necessary. Recently, there has been considerable interest in the use of plant extracts as multi-drug complex as an alternative method to control pathogenic microorganisms (Zampini et al, 2005(Zampini et al, , 2007(Zampini et al, , 2009aWagner and Ulrich-Merzenich, 2009), and many compounds of plant products have been shown to be specifically targeted against resistant pathogenic bacteria (Zampini et al, 2005(Zampini et al, , 2009b.…”
