Antimicrobial and P450 Inhibitory Properties of Common Functional Foods

Abstract: -PURPOSE: To study the effect of functional foods on human cytochrome P450 (CYP) and the gut bacterial microflora that may potentially affect drug metabolism and ultimately affect human health and wellness. METHODS: This study examined a variety of food plants from the Apiaceae, Fabaceae, and Lamiaceae families for their inhibitory potential on cytochrome 2D6-, 3A4-, 3A5-, and 3A7-mediated metabolism. The antimicrobial effects of these samples were also investigated with 7 selected bacterial surrogate species … Show more

“…Besides, it is inhibitory of dipeptidyl peptidase IV in the diabetes management (Bower et al 2014) and its nephropathy and neuropathy complications (Martynyuk et al 2014;Ramachandran et al 2014 (RaĆĄković et al 2014;da Silva Bomfim et al 2015). It is consumed as a functional food with antimicrobial capacity (Nguyen et al 2014) and a phytomedicine for skin wound healing (Pazyar et al 2014). It had inhibition of formalin-induced pain and inflammation in mice (Emami et al 2013) and H 2 O 2 induced oxidative DNA damage in human lymphocytes (Razavi-Azarkhiavi et al 2014).…”

“…9 The past decade has also witnessed intense interest in functional foods or dietary photochemical which can inuence the pharmacological activity of drugs and their toxicities by modifying metabolism system, including drug-metabolizing enzymes and transporters. 10 In the pharmaceutical industry, liver, a vital organ in the body responsible for metabolizing and detoxication of substances, 11 is one of the routinely assessed organs during preclinical safety evaluations. Indeed several biological compounds with antioxidant properties proved effective in protecting the liver against deleterious effects of paracetamol overdose.…”
