Antimicrobial/anti-biofilm activity of expired blood platelets and their released products

Abstract: In summary, platelets even after the medical expiry date are still a good source of antimicrobial low molecular weight proteins (PMPs). Testing of bacterial resistance to PMPs may be advisable as a predictive indicator of susceptibility to treatment of infections such as infective endocarditis and other local infections of biofilm nature.

“…PRP impedes P. gingivalis and A. actinomycetemcomitans adherence to the plastic plate surface and enhances falling off of both bacteria from established bacterial colonies. The ability of PRP to reduce the number of adhered microorganisms by either blocking initial adherence or enhancing bacterial falling off may minimize the progression and severity of oral infections and exert a positive influence on the surgical outcome 30,31 . It was noted that bacterial adhesion assays of this study were performed on the plastic surface, which have been performed for decades for studying bacterial attachment 32 .…”

“…In surgery and during post-operative management, platelet-derived products have been used with standard treatment in attempt to prevent infection [69][70][71][72][73][74]. Antibacterial activity from plateletderived products is felt result from increased local concentration of neutrophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes and the effect of platelet antibacterial proteins (pAMP) [69][70][71][72][73][74].…”

“…Antibacterial activity from plateletderived products is felt result from increased local concentration of neutrophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes and the effect of platelet antibacterial proteins (pAMP) [69][70][71][72][73][74]. However, very little is known about the antibacterial effects of these products [75].…”

“…There are special receptors on the platelets that are known to aggregate with bacteria. Platelets also participate in generating oxygen metabolites, including hydrogen peroxide, superoxide, and hydroxyl free radicals[106]. Largely, platelets demonstrate impressive activities against the blood-borne pathogens and also play an important role in the innate host defense against the initiation and progression of infections[106].…”

Largely, platelets demonstrate impressive activities against the blood-borne pathogens and also play an important role in the innate host defense against the initiation and progression of infections[106]. In fact Garraud et al[107] in 2015 claimed that “platelets are innate and inflammatory cells and do not only assist immunity but are immune cells themselves”.…”
