Antimicrobial Coatings from Hybrid Nanoparticles of Biocompatible and Antimicrobial Polymers

Abstract: Hybrid nanoparticles of poly(methylmethacrylate) synthesized in the presence of poly (diallyldimethyl ammonium) chloride by emulsion polymerization exhibited good colloidal stability, physical properties, and antimicrobial activity but their synthesis yielded poor conversion. Here we create antimicrobial coatings from casting and drying of the nanoparticles dispersions onto model surfaces such as those of silicon wafers, glass coverslips, or polystyrene sheets and optimize conversion using additional stabilize… Show more

“…Recently, we described hybrid NPs made of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in the presence of poly (diallyl dimethyl ammonium) chloride (PDDA) using dioctadecyl dimethyl ammonium bromide (DODAB) as an emulsifier and found that DODAB remains attached to the NPs core [56][57][58][59]. This system might bring interesting applications for antigen presentation since DODAB might eventually add the missing Th-1 response to the antigen-presenting NPs.…”

“…The PMMA/CTAB or PMMA/DODAB hybrid and polymeric NPs were obtained by emulsion polymerization of MMA using AIBN as the initiator of the MMA polymerization, similar to the synthesis previously described using potassium persulfate (KPS) as the initiator [27]. The synthesis protocol was similar to the one previously described for the synthesis of PMMA/PDDA NPs using AIBN as the initiator [21][22][23]. In order to eliminate oxygen, a flow of nitrogen gas was applied for a few minutes to 10 mL DODAB or CTAB dispersions in 1 mM NaCl added of the desired MMA concentration and 0.0036 g AIBN.…”

“…Some examples of biocompatible polymers are poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) [9], poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) [10], poly (lactic acid) [11], poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) [12], chitosan [13,14], cellulose [15], and poly (acrylates) including poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) [6,[16][17][18]. Among the poly (acrylates), several cationic latexes and coatings obtained from additives such as cationic surfactants, lipids, antimicrobial polymers or co-polymers have been described [19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. In the case of PMMA, the discovery of PMMA biocompatibility occurred when an optical technician placed a PMMA scleral lens on his eye and found that it could be well tolerated.…”

“…Cationic lipid polymer NPs and coatings are strategic for applications in antimicrobial biomimetics and vaccine design [7,8,[38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][55][56][57][58][59]. Due to the cationic lipid, lipid polymer cationic NPs can combine effectively with antibiotics DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.84618 like amphotericin B or miconazole [39,[68][69][70], rifampicin [71], clarithromycin [72], anti-inflammatory hydrophobic drugs like indomethacin [32], nucleic acids [21], oligonucleotides [35,73,74], proteins in general including serum proteins, transmembrane proteins, receptors and toxins [75][76][77][78], antigens [9,20,22,[34][35][36][37], peptides [23,[43][44][45] or polymers [79,80].…”

“…This was a facile alternative approach in comparison to strategies based on the synthesis of block copolymers incorporating both functions. Figure 3 shows the macroscopic and microscopic appearance of the very stable dispersions of PMMA/ PDDA and PMMA/PDDA/cationic amphiphile and some of their films obtained Biomimetic Nanomaterials from the Assembly of Polymers, Lipids, and Surfactants DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.84618 by casting and drying the water dispersions of NPs onto different surfaces such as polystyrene, silicon wafers or glass coverslips [80].…”
