Antimicrobial resistance profile of Escherichia coli isolates recovered from diarrheic patients at Selam Health Center, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Abstract: Antimicrobials have been playing an important role in preventing illness and death associated with infections due to bacteria. However, the emergence and spread of resistance by pathogens have decreased the effectiveness of the commonly prescribed antimicrobials. Intestinal Escherichia coli are among bacterial pathogens that are endowed with such resistance traits because they are important source and reservoir of genes that encode antimicrobial resistance. To determine the antimicrobial resistance profile of … Show more

“…Several nearby studies were performed to observe the prevalence and determinants of enteropathogens causing diarrhea in Ethiopia [16][17][18][19][20][21]. Similarly, there is also research on E. coli among under-five children and diarrheic calves within the country [22][23][24][25][26][27]. However, a complete file regarding the pathogenic strain of E. coli-mediated diarrhea is sparse, and inclusive molecular research is not available in the study area.…”

“…In Ethiopia, the use of traditional plant medicines had been practiced since the ancient time [ 6 ]. In Northern Ethiopia, the major portions (87%) of the traditional medicines are coming from plant sources [ 7 ]. However, the traditional medicines are far from the expected level of uses, safety, and efficacy in the world [ 8 , 9 ].…”
