Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci Isolated from Bovine Mastitis in Argentina

Abstract: A total of 123 isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from bovine clinical and subclinical mastitis in Argentina from March 1998 to March 2000 was investigated for in vitro susceptibility to several antimicrobial agents. Minimum inhibitory concentrations that inhibit 90% of the isolates tested (reported in micrograms per milliliter) were: 4.40, 0.38, 4.00, 0.75, 0.75, 3.60, and 2.00 for penicillin, oxacillin, cephalothin, gentamicin, erythromycin, clindamycin, and ampicillin-sulbactam, respectiv… Show more

“…A somatic cell count exceeding 200 000 in 1 ml of milk and positive bacteriological cultures of milk without general symptoms were considered to be indicators of subclinical mastitis. Macroscopic changes in milk and/or local changes within the mammary gland as well as general symptoms with increased somatic cell count > 200 000/ml milk indicated clinical mastitis (De Vliegher et al 2003, Gentilini et al 2002, Moon et al 2007.…”

“…Recentemente, os SCN têm apresentado grande relevância como agentes patogênicos responsáveis por perdas econômicas substanciais aos produtores de leite (Gentilini 2002). Este fato torna-se ainda mais grave quando essas bactérias apresentam resistência a vários antibióticos disponíveis para o tratamento da mastite.…”

“…Antibiotic treatment of mastitis leads to significant increase in milk quantity and quality, lower somatic cell count and is likely associated with a reduction in prevalence of clinical mastitis among herds, which is economically beneficial (Oliver et al, 2003). Bacterial identification and susceptibility tests are important for selecting the appropriate antimicrobial agent affecting certain diseases (Gentilini et al, 2002). Examples of recent studies that conducted such tests are Murti and Kumar (2011) and Tirumalai and Prakash (2012).…”
