Antimicrobial susceptibility of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates causing LRTI in Najaf, Iraq

Abstract: 74 (12.3%) isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae were isolated from 600 patients (359 males and 241 females) with clinical symptoms of Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) (pneumonia and COPD) obtained from Najaf/Iraq Hospitals. Patients in the age groups 51-60 years had a high percentage of S. pneumoniae isolates (19.7%) compared with other age groups with a significant variation (P<0.05) between them. Males (54%) showed a higher percentage of S. pneumoniae isolates than females (45.9%) with no significa… Show more

“…Streptococcus pnumonia showed a high sensitivity of 100% to ciprofloxacin, 50% to amoxicillin, ampicillin, clindamycin, erythromycin and metronidazole, while it had no resistance to azithromycin, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, tetracyclin, and cefixem. These results are in agreement with [28] and [31] which revealed that S.pneumonia was highly resistant to ampicillin, amoxicillin, cefixem, and azithromycin.…”

“…Problem of macrolide resistant pneumococcus has also been detected in study conducted by Niederman (2015). 13 Although the resistance pattern of cotrimoxazole, ceftriaxone and penicillin did not match with other studies the resistance to ciprofloxacin 13.48% was quite close to the study conducted by Zahraa et al 14 (2017) in which 16.2% of the strains of S. pneumoniae were resistant to ciprofloxacin.…”

“…More S. pneumoniae were isolated from males 15 (60%) than females 10 (40%) This may be due to the fact that smoking is more common in males (12) . Despite variations in percent of isolates, Al-Taaie (13) found that pneumococci had a total incidence among those aged over 49 years.…”
