Antimutagenic Effects of Selenium-Enriched Polysaccharides from Pyracantha fortuneana through Suppression of Cytochrome P450 1A Subfamily in the Mouse Liver

Abstract: Both selenium (Se) and polysaccharides from Pyracantha fortuneana (Maxim.) Li (PFPs) (P. fortuneana) have been reported to possess antioxidative and immuno-protective activities. Whether or not Se-containing polysaccharides (Se-PFPs) have synergistic effect of Se and polysaccharides on enhancing the antioxidant and immune activities remains to be determined. We previously reported that polysaccharides isolated from Se-enriched P. fortuneana (Se-PFPs) possessed hepatoprotective effects. However, it is not clear… Show more

“…22 However, increased (p < 0.05) SOD, CAT, GST GPx activities in Sel and DCF co-treated rats showed the protective augmentation of Sel against DCF-induced oxidative stress via enhancement of antioxidant enzymes activities in line with previous findings. 48,[52][53][54] GSH acts as a cofactor of several detoxifying enzymes (e.g. GPx, GST), scavenging intracellular free radicals.…”

“…Skeletal muscle is the major site of selenium storage, accounting for approximately 28-46% of the total selenium pool (Pascual and Aranda 2013). Selenium has several promising roles in the human body such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic, anti-carcinogenic, antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal effects (Rayman 2000;Cihalova et al 2015;Shakibaie et al 2015;Malhotra et al 2016;Peng et al 2016;Stolzoff and Webster 2016;Maiyo and Singh 2017).…”
