“…To some extents, it is therefore, logical to say that there is a direct relationship between phenolic contents, antioxidant and antimutagenic activities. This is in line with the opinions of some investigators who previously used Ames test to evaluate mutagenicity and antimutagenicity of plant extracts and fruit juices (Zahin et al, 2010;Schneider et al, 1997;Cherdshewasart et al, 2008;Ham et al, 2009;Karekar et al, 2000;Oh et al, 2008;Rauscher et al, 1998;Son et al, 2003). In the other of FDFJ except M. fragrans, induction of negative percentage reduction of CP-induced CA or total arrest of cell division by the mixture of the FDFJ and CP at certain concentrations may be due to prooxidative activity of phenoilc compounds, causing generation of ROS to cause more DNA damages.…”

“…Antimutagenic activity in the Ames test revealed that the P. mirifica extracts exhibited a higher antimutagenic than either the P. lobata extracts or puerarin, the key plant isoflavonoids. However, the antimutagenic potentials of these two plant extracts were still lower than that of another Thai herb, Mucuna collettii submitted to the same test (30). Thus, although not mutagenic, these two herbs are not likely to be preferred to others such as M. collettii for preventive medication against cancer, but are likely to continue to be used for the current purposes.…”

“…Herbal medicinal products are easily accessible and can be found at informal markets, pharmacies, health-food stores or bought online (3) . Even though the use of herbal remedies generally targets well-being there is an increased demand for immune and energy boosters, as well as detoxifi ers (4) . Herbal remedies are also used to treat various ailments (such as immune disorders, multidrug resistant microbial infections and carcinomas) due to the local abundance, cultural signifi cance and inexpensive procurement, when compared to Western pharmaceuticals (5) .…”
