Antinuclear antibodies: A marker associated with steroid dependence in patients with ulcerative colitis

Abstract: ANAs are associated with steroid dependence in UC patients. Further studies are required to determine the role of ANAs as serological markers for prediction of steroid dependence in order to perform early therapeutic interventions with biological agents.

“…The diagnostic findings are summarized in Table 1 . Taken together, the immunological alterations were compatible with the previously known ulcerative colitis ( 11 ). The electrophysiological findings (Figure 1 ) would be compatible with primary (idiopathic) generalized epilepsy; however, the history for epileptic seizures including absences and myoclonic jerks was negative.…”

“…One report listed antinuclear antibodies as a possible predictive factor of steroid dependency in patients with UC. 37 This report did not mention a direct association between Mayo score as a measurement tool of disease severity and steroid dependency. In our study, a higher Mayo score was shown to be associated with steroid dependency.…”

“…Several studies have identified several indicators that confer a poor prognosis associated with UC. Examples include: the presence of antinuclear antibodies in DM patients 28 which are associated with uveitis, steroid dependency 29 , and paradoxical rheumatological manifestations resulting from treatment involving anti- tumour necrosis factor agents 30 . Additionally, the presence of mucocutaneous manifestations occurring in DM were also associated with primary sclerosing cholangitis in UC patients 31 .…”
